Frequently Asked Questions:

1. What is a T-group?

In a T-group, you get to have a learning experience and immediately apply and practice what you learned. Participants work in a small group (roughly 12), with two experienced facilitators (aka trainers). The group meets over a span of a few days in multiple 2 to 3-hour sessions per day. During these sessions, participants learn from their interactions with each other and through exploring their own and others’ reactions, perceptions and behaviors.

2. Do I need to have any previous training to participate in a t-group?

No.

3. What does my registration fee include?

Tuition, lodging and meals.

4. What will I get out of participating in this T-Group?

What you get out of the T-group depends on how you participate. The following results are highly likely:

  • Improved ability to say what you mean and mean what you say.
  • Be more fully yourself and express more parts of yourself.
  • Be in touch with your emotions and express them in appropriate ways.
  • Give and receive constructive feedback in ways that strengthen relationships.
  • Raise and resolve difficult interpersonal issues that may arise in the group.
  • Build more open, trusting relationships.
  • Self-disclose in a manner that promotes inquiry and dialogue.
  • Feel a deeper sense of connection through learning about common life experiences of other women of African Descent.
  • Better appreciate and explore the impact of all forms of diversity and differences that exist between women of African Descent.

5. I don’t really like talking about my feelings. Should I come to this weekend?

It can be challenging to talk about feelings, especially for women of African descent who have been taught to “be strong” for others. However, the skill of sharing emotions is important to the healing and growth process and to connecting at a deeper level with yourself and others. If you are willing to lean into the challenge of naming your feelings, this T-Group is for you. You will never be pushed to go deeper than you are ready to go, but you should be prepared to share at some level. For the group to develop, it is important for all members to fully participate, including sharing thoughts and feelings.

6. How do I know if this experience is right for me?

This experience is for you if:

  • You want to increase your self awareness.
  • You want to be more sensitive in relationship to others.
  • You want to practice giving and receiving feedback.
  • You want to improve how you communicate with others.
  • You want to build more open, trusting relationships.
  • You want to feel a deeper sense of connection with other women of African Descent.
